Component Development & Research Laboratory

The Component Development & Research Laboratory is part of the Welsh Blood Service and focuses on improving the quality and safety of blood products.

As a specialised facility, it plays a key role in developing and testing innovative blood components to make transfusions and other treatments safer and more effective for patients.

Through its work in creating new types of blood products and supporting research clinicians, the laboratory contributes to saving lives and enhancing healthcare for people in Wales and beyond.

Our Capabilities

Development of Blood Components

  • Designing and testing new blood products tailored for specific clinical needs, such as cold-stored platelets.
  • These innovations aim to improve the safety, efficacy and availability of blood components.

Collaborations and Partnerships

  • Working closely with academia, NHS Wales, the armed forces and international research networks to drive innovation and share expertise.
  • Supporting research clinicians in advancing pre-hospital care, transfusion treatments and transfusion in challenging environments.

Training and Student Support

  • Supporting student researchers and healthcare scientists, providing hands-on experience and fostering the next generation of experts in transfusion science and blood research.
